How to tell companies and organisations when someone dies by using death notification services

When a loved one passes away, dealing with the huge amount of paperwork to notify companies and organisations of the death can be overwhelming, especially during a time of distress.

From utilities to banking, insurance and broadband providers to name but a few, the time and energy required to contact each individual company or organisation can be considerable. Thankfully, there is now a range of services that you can use to simplify and speed up the process.

In this guide, we Will cover the two main providers of death notification services available in the UK and how you can use them.

Tell us Once

The ‘Tell us Once’ service notifies government and public sector services in one go. Usually, the registrar Will inform you of this service when you register the death. They Will either provide you with a form to fill in or provide a unique reference number that you can use to complete the form online or over the phone.

By using this service, you Will be able to notify the following:

  • HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC)
  • Department for Work and Pensions (DWP)
  • Passport Office, Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA)
  • Local council - to cancel Housing Benefits, Council Tax and remove the person from the electoral register
  • Veterans UK - to cancel Armed Forces Compensation Scheme payments
  • My Civil Service Pension
  • NHS Pension Scheme
  • Armed Forces Pension Scheme
